The town of Křivoklát was established in 896 by the merger of the villages of Budy and Amalín. Křivoklát Castle, rebuilt from the original wooden hunting fort into a stone castle in the early 12th century, was owned by the kings of Bohemia. It was held by the Přemyslids (Přemysl Otakar II), followed by the Luxembourgs (Charles IV), Jagiellons and the Habsburgs. From 1685, it was held by the Wallensteins and between 1733 and 1929 by the Fürstenbergs.
The house "U Jelena" (At the Stag) was built in 1858 by the forest manager J.B.Gintl.
In the next year, the house was rented out to serve as a restaurant. Various cultural and musical parties and events were held there and we would like
to carry on in that tradition.
We look forward to your visit!
A BIT OF HISTORY
More about Křivoklát...
Křivoklát is one of the oldest and most significant castles of the dukes and kings of Bohemia, and it dates back to the 12th century.
During the reign of Přemysl Otakar II, an extensive and majestic royal castle was built, which was significantly rebuilt by Wenceslas IV and subsequently generously expanded by Vladislav Jagiellon.
Křivoklát has been severely damaged by fire several times. At one point it became a feared prison and its significance declined sharply. 19th century romanticism and, above all, the castle's owner, the Fürstenbergs, who held the castle until 1929, saved the castle by renovating it.
The beautiful castle chapel, the royal and knights` hall with an exhibition of Gothic paintings and sculptures, a library featuring some 52,000 volumes, the rich collections
of the Fürstenberg family in the museum and picture gallery, the famous prison and torture rooms with their torture instruments, the monumental tower with hunting collections and a view of the area, a pleasant walk along the castle walls, the Huderka Tower with a scullery and an observation deck, the residence of the local governor with occasional exhibitions - Křivoklát Castle, a national cultural monument, offers all this and much more.
